Social Media Use Among Teens and Youths

My content is takeaways on social media use by young adults and teens. I looked at two articles that were published by the Pew Research Center to find this information. The main points from both articles were that young adults are the most likely to use social media. In particular, it found that 90% of young adults use some form of social media. They also found that young adults were 83% likely to have some common amount of daily social media use. Those who live in urban areas are also more likely to use social media.

Social media use by teens and young adults are increasing. According to an article by the Pew Research Center “Young adults (ages 18 to 29) are the most likely to use social media – fully 90% do.” (Perrin, 2015, p.3). Pew also found that location affects youths’ social media use. Youths that live in urban areas are more likely to use social media and those that live in rural areas are less likely to do so. (Perrin, 2015, p.9). However Pew also found that “Adults who live in rural communities have historically been the least likely to use social media. In 2005, 5% of rural residents reported social media usage. Today, 58% of rural residents use social media.” (Perrin, 2015, p.9). Which shows that even rural youths are becoming more likely to use social media. A second article from Pew also goes into detail on what social media sites youths are visiting. Youths are most likely to use Twitter. (Brenner & Duggan, 2012, p.4). Pinterest also has a high rate of social media use from youths. Pew states that “Whites, young people, the well-educated, those with higher income, and women are particularly likely to use the site.” (Brenner & Duggan, 2012, p.5). Instagram receives around a 28% use from young adults and highschool age people. (Brennan & Duggan, 2012, p.5). Facebook also has a large percentage of young users. Around 86% of young people used Facebook around 2012. (Brennan & Duggan, 2012, p.6).
